Searching for Sentinels

Will Goodlet

Sentinels are beautiful birds and seem, at least to me, to possess a wonderful character. With their alert poses and rock hopping antics, they remind me of the beautiful Rockjumpers that inhabit the Drakensberg some 3,000 metres above sea level (another bird that I desperately want to photograph properly). I suppose, the same niche is filled by Sentinels on the lower heights of the Suikerbosrand near Johannesburg, South Africa.

When winter comes, I always look to the Suikerbos for the opportunity to photograph these colourful birds and other creatures that inhabit the rocks and crevices along the ridgeline.
